The Rise of the Staycation
When you cast your mind back, you probably can’t pinpoint the exact time it happened – you'll probably think it’s related to the pandemic but you’re not entirely sure. Yes, we’re talking about the first time you heard the word ‘staycation’!
Is it down to the pandemic?
Although holidaying in the UK rather than going abroad isn’t a new phenomenon, the word ‘staycation’ has certainly been used a lot more since the coronavirus pandemic when international travel was off the cards.
According to Statista “Following the COVID-19 lockdown, the holiday-related search term with the highest growth in the UK was “staycation”. This term soared in popularity and saw year-over-year growth of over 500 percent in 2020.”
2020 did see record levels of domestic tourism, but this was a market that was on the rise even before the pandemic. A report from Barclays on staycations in 2019 found that when surveyed, three in ten domestic holidaymakers (31%) said they planned to spend more holiday time in the UK in 2019 than they did in previous years.
A rising trend
Although the pandemic is now behind us, there are other factors contributing to people choosing to holiday in the UK rather than go abroad, such as Brexit, or the Cost-of-Living Crises adding to the growth of the UK tourism industry.
As a result of the cost-of-living crises, UK budget holidays are becoming increasingly popular as more people look to explore their country’s unique sights and attractions without breaking the bank.
As well as wanting to take advantage of a cheaper break, many tourists are looking to explore the great outdoors on their holidays. From camping in the countryside to beach holidays and mountain hikes, the UK is home to some of the most picturesque outdoor locations in the world.
Romantic getaways are also popular for couples looking for a break away from everyday life. From relaxing spa retreats to cosy lodges in the countryside, there are plenty of romantic hideaways for couples looking to get away from the bustle of everyday life.
As well as offering a unique mix of adventure, culture, and support for local communities, staycations also help visitors to reduce their carbon footprint – something that is currently a huge topic of conversation.
